Public transport drivers and cyclists discuss mutual understanding and tolerance

On August 30 "Rīgas satiksme" held seminar "Mutual understanding between public transport drivers and cyclists". The participants of the seminar analysed various situations on the roads involving public transport drivers and cyclists, rehearsed road traffic regulations, as well as discussed ways of avoiding conflicts among the above mentioned participants of road traffic.

The seminar was opened by "Rīgas satiksme" Board Chairman Leons Bemhens, who stressed the goal of the seminar – to reach mutual understanding among public transport drivers and cyclists, as well as mentioned the most typical conflict situations    so far.

In continuation of the seminar, Normunds Krapsis, the deputy director of the Order Police of Riga Regional Directorate of the State Police presented the situation as seen by the police, the statistical data on road accidents. He acknowledged that the number of accidents involving public transport drivers and cyclists is rather small, as well as explained the most common causes of misunderstanding.

Juris Teteris, the head of the Qualification Department of the Road Traffic Safety Directorate, reminded the participants of the seminar about the road traffic regulations and explained how they should be observed in practice.        

Viesturs Silenieks, the chairman of the board of the Latvian Cyclists Association, explained how cyclists feel themselves on the road and called for mutual understanding of public transport drivers. In conclusion the seminar analysed the situations that most often lead to conflicts and gave recommendations how to avoid such situations.

The presentations of the seminar participants were followed by a live discussion, during which everybody could ask questions, share practical experience, as well as to make proposals. It was proposed to start a wider discussion in media, to streamline legislation and improve infrastructure. "Rīgas satiksme" reminds that mutual understanding among those participating in road traffic is crucial. It is important not just to know one’s rights, but also to treat one another with understanding.

The educational seminar was held at "Rīgas satiksme’s" 2nd trolleybus depot. The seminar and discussion was organised by "Rīgas satiksme" in partnership with the State police, the Road Traffic Safety Directorate and the Latvian Cyclists Association. The event was attended by more than 200 "Rīgas satiksme" drivers who listened to the opinions of officials, situation analysis and proposals.
